Effective Team Building

A successful company is one that knows the value of each employee. It is run by visionary managers and team leaders who recognise the needs of each department. They take time to help each team know how to work together in order to maximise their productivity, even when each member has a distinct personality. After all, one can never deny the presence of co-employees who just seem difficult to work with. There are the office gossip, the drama queen, the know-it-all, the wannabe boss, the credit grabber, the indifferent worker and the rebel. Beyond these stereotyped characters are employees whose positive qualities can complement the others' strengths. This fact is usually brought to the spotlight during team building activities.

Even with the popularity of team building events, though, some managers cannot help but wonder whether or not their teams have visibly improved. This is because team building must never be a typical programmed activity that merely inspires, not draws out necessary skills. On the other hand, an effective team building event is tailored to the specific needs and expectations of each group. It brings the team members out of their comfort zones and challenges them to employ skills that are rarely used or undiscovered. This is why many corporations have found survival based activities to be the right type of team building event. By placing them in an uncomfortable situation wherein they have to work with one another in order to survive, the focus is placed on the positive traits of each member of the group.

Getting to and from the site will require teams to use navigational skills. This means using analytic abilities, evaluating options and making decisions. It will entail good planning and communication among the members of the team. Making a fire for heat and for cooking requires teamwork and enhances their problem-solving skills. Building a shelter involves resourcefulness in finding materials and teamwork in constructing the structure. The employees will need to be creative in building a shelter, as well as in setting traps for animals that they will hunt. By splitting a big group into different teams, they can also be competitive in a friendly yet challenging setting. After all of these intensive tasks, members always get back to their workplaces with a higher sense of self-esteem, having a healthy knowledge of their usefulness and worth within the team.
