Selecting a Pocket Knife

Out in the wilds, there is one item that can become your best friend: your multi-function pocket knife. Also called a “multi-tool” and a “Swiss Army knife,” this handy knife can include nearly everything you need to help you survive in the outdoors. It can help you build a shelter, cook food and make a fire. Depending on the tools it contains, it can even help you know what time it is and help you to see at night.

When you buy a multi-function pocket knife, it is best to make a list first of the things that you need. This will depend on your activity. For a trip to the wilds, you will want a big knife, as well as a medium-sized or small one. A wood saw and a pair of pliers would also do. For not-so-extreme camping trips, you might be bringing along canned goods. In this case, you will want your pocket knife to contain a can opener, too. Your knife can also contain a LED light, which is bright enough to help you see at night if you happen to be out in the wilds on a moonless night.

If you want to use your multi-tool not just for outdoor excursions but also for casual camping and beach trips, then you can choose more features. You can have a bottle opener, a screwdriver, a pair of scissors, a corkscrew and a hook.

Make sure that you know your budget. Swiss Army knives can range in prices from ten to a thousand bucks, depending on their quality, functionality and brand. Go for one that is ultra-durable so that it will survive in the wilds. Choose one with extra sharp knives. You would want to get a waterproof container for your knife, too.
